Ever since Hurricane Sandy<\/a> wrought havoc on the East Coast, \u2018resilient design<\/a>\u2019 has been a hot topic of conversation \u2014 and not just amongst architects and designers, but politicians, engineers and city planners as well. In November 2012, \u2018Resilient Design\u2019 was a trending search term in Google, moving from near obscurity in the months before the devastating super storm<\/a> to a popular catchphrase post-Sandy. Natural disasters like this, and more recently the\u00a0typhoon<\/a>\u00a0that hit the Philippines in early November,\u00a0serve to remind those of us in the green design community that while building with pure \u201csave-the-earth\u201d ecological motivation is certainly important, low-VOC-paints<\/a> and LEED points<\/a> don\u2019t matter much if a building becomes uninhabitable due to flooding<\/a>, earthquake<\/a>, power outages<\/a> or some other natural or manmade disaster. That\u2019s where resilient design comes into play. According to the Resilient Design Institute<\/a>, resilient design is defined as \u201cthe intentional design of buildings, landscapes, communities, and regions in response to vulnerabilities to disaster and disruption of normal life\u201d.<\/p>\n
