Contemporary Techniques in Architecture (Architectural Design)

Contemporary Techniques in Architecture addresses the translation of techniques in design methodology to their architectural realisation, at the scale of space, material programme and construction. It challenges technique-driven experimental architects at the next intellectually rigorous level – that of exploring concepts and translating them into their material counterparts. How do you think through the building of avant-garde forms? The title includes the work of high-profile philosophers, architects and engineers, such as Manuel Delanda who wrote 1000 Years of Non-Linear History; Greg Lynn and Foreign Office Architects; and Cecil Balmond of Ove Arup, who worked with Daniel Libeskind on his proposal for the Spiral Building for the V&A Museum in London, as well as with Philip Johnson and Studio Baad on the Chavasse Park Project featured here.
Intellectually stimulating and visually engaging, with its inclusion of spectacular writing, designs, manufactured prototypes and full-scale buildings, Contemporary Techniques in Architecture takes architectural publishing’s treatment of the digital to a new level, looking at its potential in a realised form as well as a creative medium.

Hypersurface Architecture (Architectural Design)

Essays and works by the leaders in the field of computer-generated architectural design.

This book explores the advances in architecture made possible by digital technology. The integration of cyberspace and the built environment is producing an entirely new method of designing. The works of key architects, including Bernard Tschumi, Philip Johnson, and Togo Ito, are featured to illustrate this new method. Includes essays by Peter Eisenman, Andrew Benjamin, Peter Lunenfield, and Marcus Novah.

Stephen Perrella (New York, NY) lectures at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University. He is also the editor of the architectural newsletter Newsline, and the president of Hypersurface Systems, Inc., a World Wide Web design company.

Hypersurface Architecture II (Architectural Design)

The first edition of Hypersurface presented an analysis of contemporary culture that identified two interpenetrating trends: avant garde architecture and everyday commercial practices. Hypersurface II demonstrates the convergence of these two forces that radicalizes form and deterritorializes subjectivity. This second edition further investigates the way in which effects emerge within architecture and explores the manifestations of this unprecedented moment in architecture where the rampages of commercial culture begin to cross-contaminate architectural form.

International School Ikast Brande / CF Moller

Architects: CF Moller
Location: ,
Area: 2,600 sqm
Year: 2013
Photographs: Martin Schubert, Julian Weyer

Landscape Architect: C.F. Møller Landscape
Engineer: Midtconsult
Contractor: KPC

From the architect. The international school in Ikast-Brande (ISIB) has inaugurated a new 2,600 m2 building, which includes a school, after-school and kindergarten. C.F. Møller has designed the complex like a small town with individual volumes located around a square and winding streets.

The international school, which only teaches in English, is so popular that it has now been expanded with new facilities. 130 students are ready for the new school year at the International School, which with the new building can accommodate up to 200 students.

Inside the two-storey building of light brickwork, there are omnipresent views to the green landscape and a pleasant natural light influx, creating a bright and friendly environment for the children and staff. The window openings are placed in a pixelated and lively pat-tern that allows natural light deep into the rooms – and opens the views for big and small alike.

Centrally located in the school complex is a long superstructure with a curved form. The superstructure contains ventilation systems and skylights, and is clad in translucent fa-cade panels and double-glazed windows, respectively. The curved form is continued in the sinuous balconies framing the central “square”, which acts as a multi-purpose space for drama, music, dining and lectures as well as the main social space of the school.

The new school is located as an addition to an existing educational complex. The sur-rounding park-like landscape is partially designed as shady woodlands, with embedded playgrounds and playing fields, and a smaller screened area for the kindergarten.

Wiklands Backe / Sandell Sandberg

Architects: Sandell Sandberg
Location: , Sweden
Year: 2013

From the architect. In the coastal village of Kivik we were commissioned to design 12 houses. The building permission was strict and only allowed a roof angle of 45 degrees. To create an interesting spacial experience we divided the houses in different units, the high ceiling makes the interior rather unique although it’s traditional shape.

Through this division of the house, the exterior scale is taken down and each volume is perceived as individual houses, this creates a nice connection to the old town of Kivik with small houses and narrow alleys.

CTBUH Crowns One World Trade as Tallest Building in US

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has official ruled Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s One World Trade Center (1WTC) as the tallest building in the United States. The decision comes after a long debate questioned whether or not the tower’s 408 foot spire should count towards its overall height.

As CTBUH explained: “Due to design changes that resulted in the removal of the architectural cladding around the mast at the top of the structure, it became unclear whether the structure was in fact a ‘spire’ – a vertical element that completes the architectural expression of the building and is intended as permanent, or whether it was an antenna – a piece of functional-technical equipment that was subject to change.”

The detailed information presented by the design team “affirmed that the structure on top of the building is meant as a permanent architectural feature, not a piece of functional-technical equipment,” stated Timothy Johnson, Chairman of CTBUH and Design Partner at NBBJ.

“The design of One World Trade Center, as explained to us, reinforces its role as a symbol of resurgence on this important site,” said CTBUH Executive Director Antony Wood. “In particular, the spire which holds the beacon light, shining out at the symbolic height of 1,776 feet, is especially poignant – echoing the similarly symbolic beacon atop the Statue of Liberty across the water.”

When complete in early 2014, 1WTC will surpass The Willis (formerly Sears) Tower in Chicago as the Tallest Building in North America. At 1,776 feet (541 meters), 1WTC will likely be the third-tallest building in the world upon completion, after the 2,717 foot (828 meters) Burj Khalifa in Dubai and 1,972 foot (601 meters) Makkah Royal Clock Tower in Saudi Arabia.

Integrated Land Use and Transport Modelling: Decision Chains and Hierarchies (Cambridge Urban and Architectural Studies)

The integration of the location of activities in space and the use of transport has been a theoretical planning issue for many years. However, most books on this subject treat each component of the land use and transportation system with different, sometimes even conflicting, theories. The purpose of this book is to present the issue in the light of a single and consistent theoretical framework, that of random utility theory and discrete choice models. This is achieved in a methodical way, reviewing microeconomic theory related to the use of space, spatial interaction models, entropy maximising models, and finally, random utility theory. Emphasis is given to the concepts of decision chains and hierarchies. Spatial input-output models are also discussed, followed by chapters specifically dealing with the location of activities, the land market and the transport system. The book ends with the description of a number of real case studies to show how the theory can be used in practice.
